Ex-Rolls Royce Merlin Engine assembly line wall regulator by Smith & Son Derby.

Ref: 1113

Oak cased wall clock by John Smith & Sons Derby with 8 day fusee movement with silvered scientific dial with centre seconds.

A series of these clocks were supplied exclusively to the Rolls Royce aero engine works in Derby and were used for timing processes in the assembly lines for such famous engines as the Eagle and Merlin that powered both the Spitfire and Hurricane fighter planes. According to a member of the Smiths family only 30 were supplied.

Heavy rectangular plated movement with 4 pillars, dead beat escapement. Precision pendulum with hard-wood and brass rod, extremely large brass bob with very fine adjustment.

Solid oak case with pendulum viewing aperture, heavy cast brass bezel with very thick, bevelled glass. Heavy silvered dial finely engraved with central time display and large outer seconds.

During the 1970’s they were deemed a fire risk because of their wooden cases and so were taken down and then given as long service awards to Rolls Royce employees.
